bell leisurely ruffled a hand through his messy crown of ruddy hair, sending the orphan petals that had accumulated there careening to the ground, spinning gracefully like pirouetting ballerinas as they fell. the frequency with which the act repeated gave the young man some resemblance to the shedding trees surrounding the dirt path he presently tread.
some wanderlust (he would avow if questioned) had brought him here to to this rain-forest, which bloomed beauteously with the spectacle and fragrance of countless blossoms.
the heady aroma wafted thick in the morning air, almost cloyingly so; it clung to church robes and skin with a stubborn tenacity, seeping deeply into pores of fabric and flesh, so that only the heat of exertion might threaten to dislodge the odorous intruder; and it would be sent fleeing, swept away in rivulets of saccharine sweat.
for now, bell proceeded forth in no particular direction—merely content to allow the hand of fate to guide him. he regarded his surroundings with both optimistic wariness and a well-honed curiosity, a silver key clenched firmly in hand.
