the first time she gets into a proper fight, a bleeding-knuckles-and-kick-your-teeth-in fight, not some scrap over rotten food, she’s thirteen years old. the memory sears sharp as hot iron into her memory: time screeches to a halt and all the world moves through molasses. all the world but her. it’s the first time she’s in a fight and it’s the first time she’s powerful. she’s scrawny and small, more broken bones than bruises, scum even the rats would pass up on.[break][break]

she remembers gritting her teeth and shoving her palm into the other guy’s nose, pushing the bone up until the pressure behind his eyes makes him see red. he stumbles back, slow as anything, and she kicks him in the nuts. maybe he said something, then, but the sound was low and unintelligible and all that registered was that she won. she won and her pale hands are covered in blood and grime and she grins. the world comes back into focus again, the wind and the noise of the city finally catching up with her.[break][break]

the memory stands out in her brain in red and white, but she can’t remember whether it’s the magic or the blood she got addicted to, first.
